I am Dr. Elise van der Mark, a Dutch anthropologist committed to understanding how knowledge can drive equality and social change. My work bridges research, policy, and practice through participatory and qualitative methodologies that centre lived experience and collaboration.

Currently, I work as a senior researcher at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, leading participatory action research on gender equality in the workplace together with the International Institute of Social History and the Netherlands Trade Union Confederation (FNV).

Over the past eighteen years, I have conducted research and managed social development projects in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the Netherlands. My focus has evolved around themes such as women empowerment, education, disability and care, inclusive health, and the role of arts and culture in wellbeing. Across all these fields, my guiding question remains the same: how can research contribute to structural, lasting change?

Beyond my professional life, I find balance and inspiration in travel with my partner and our eight-year-old twins, spending time outdoors, reading, yoga, playing music, and occasionally dancing.
