Daily Life Struggles

An exciting day! After a long summer break, today I will meet again with the group of mothers of last year. I am anxious to see them again and find out how they are. At the same time I wonder whether they will show up and whether they are still keen to proceed with this project. Even considering “African time” – a concept which indicates punctuality is not to be expected- the mothers are late. At half past twelve, only a handful have arrived. The greetings are warm and kind, yet we all wonder where the rest might be. Eventually Nompu arrives and explains. As she has functioned as an informal leader, other mothers have phoned or texted her to let her know they won’t be making it to the project. The reasons for their absence are exemplary for the struggles they face daily. It resembles the scientific literature found on mothers living in poverty. Asanda has trouble finding a babysitter for her child; Nobu can’t afford transport to come to our sessions; Sari is expected to attend a course for her work on Saturdays or she will face lay-off; Nodende’s mother is in hospital; and Tobi, Noku and Bonda all have to care for their disabled child as they got sick over the holidays.

Life happens they say, yet for these women the seemingly common life events may mean the difference between barely getting by and not being able to provide for basic needs. Attendance of an action research project in this case, or other government, parastatal or NGO projects can be severely compromised as mothers try to balance the care for their disabled child and the rest of their responsibilities. I am grateful for their determination to attend and to start making small changes.

I find it effective that you decided to add a photo of the quote "Don't let your struggle become your identity". Everyone goes through their own life struggles. I doubt there would ever be an end to it. But it does not and should not ever define us. We are capable of facing each struggle and come out better than ever. It is simply up to us whether we would want to or not.

Sometimes there are things that will test our lives surprisingly and will caught us off guard. Although these problems or tests are just struggles that will help us become stronger as a person. I also like the quotation in the picture, never let struggle define you. Always remember that you are stronger than any problems in the world. You just have to trust yourself that you can overcome all of them and you will be surprise in the future that you can defeat them.

Well, it happens. Don't worry about it too much. I think everything will be fine with this project.

Being a mother requires a lot of responsibilities and that alone could be physically draining. What an individual needs is an utmost dedication to consider herself as a mother. We should extend our understanding when these situations happen, especially if their children are physically challenged. But nonetheless, I am confident that this project will go places, and would be successful!

We all have our struggles in life. Life cannot be called life if it is without trials and challenges. Sometimes, we need to face such for us to to learn and to be strong. Yes, we need this. But it does not mean, we live through this. Struggles will come, walk through it, pass by, do not stay. Move on to the next chapter of your life, bringing with you your learning and realizations from the past stage you have walked through. Struggles shape our identity but it must not be our identity.

Life needs struggle, without it we can't survive.
